BODMIN JAIL

Bodmin Jail, built in 1779 in Cornwall, is an infamous and historic prison with a reputation as one of Britain’s most haunted sites. Originally constructed as part of a reform movement to improve prison conditions, it quickly became known for its harsh environment and the grim fates of those held within.

Executions took place on-site, and hundreds of prisoners, including men, women, and even children, were housed here, many of whom endured brutal conditions. The jail was operational until 1927, after which it fell into decay, adding to its eerie atmosphere.

​Today, Bodmin Jail has been transformed into a unique luxury hotel and museum, blending historical preservation with modern amenities. The revamped Bodmin Jail Hotel opened in 2021, after a multimillion-pound renovation that restored much of the original architecture while reimagining the once-grim cells into lavish suites. Each hotel room occupies two former cells, with stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and subtle nods to the jail’s past that add to its haunting charm.

Numerous reports of ghostly encounters come from visitors and paranormal investigators alike, who speak of cold drafts, unexplained sounds, and sightings of shadowy figures. Bodmin Jail has even been featured in various ghost-hunting shows and horror documentaries.
