This derelict, Grade II listed building was built in 1839.
During its 200 years of history, it has been a workhouse, hospital and even a prison. Like many Victorian workhouses, there are many tales of maltreatment and suffering and in the 1890’s it was deemed inadequate for purpose. At one point, it is thought to have housed 150 inmates at a time on wired beds with no mattresses.
Eventually, the council took over the site as a Public Assistance Institution in the 1930’s until 1948 when it became Bron-Y-Garth hospital and joined the NHS.
It is unknown how many deaths have occurred here, but it is thought to be in the 100’s.
On the inside, the building still contains many of the fixtures and fittings from the time of closure in 2009. The eerie cells, mortuary, hospital equipment and other decaying remains make Bron-Y-Garth like a time capsule, giving visitors a glimpse into its past.
Bron-Y-Garth is not for the faint hearted. It is thought to be one of the most haunted building in Wales.
The building has a long history of death, torment and suffering from those who stayed here and the reports of paranormal activity do not disappoint.
There have been a range of reports from disembodied voices, feelings of being touched, slamming of doors, footsteps, apparitions and the laughter of children to name a few.
There is no one-point of interest for paranormal activity in Bron, the whole building is thought to be very active!
It is a must for any ghost hunter to investigate. It’s one not to miss and so it should be noted that it is not expected to remain as a derelict hospital for much longer.
