HOOKE COURT

What goes 'bump' in the night?

Hooke Court sits in the small village of Hooke near Beaminster. A historic manor house, with parts dating from the medieval and post-medieval periods.

Historic England lists Hooke Court as a Grade II* listed country house, with early and later 17th-century ranges, rebuilding after a Civil War fire, and surviving features connected to earlier medieval occupation.

The Gatehouse Record notes that Robert Sifrewast was granted a licence to crenellate at Hoke in 1344, meaning permission was given to fortify or give the building defensive features. This strongly suggests Hooke Court was a high-status medieval site, likely connected to important local landowners.

One of the strongest historical hooks is the English Civil War connection. Historic England records that Hooke Court’s south range includes rebuilding after a Civil War fire.

But it is after dark that Hooke Court reveals its more unsettling side.

Guests and investigators have reported cold spots, unexplained footsteps, disembodied voices, doors opening on their own, and shadowy figures moving through the grounds. The bedrooms and upper floors are said to hold a particularly strange atmosphere, while the surrounding woodland and old features of the estate add to the feeling that something still lingers here.
