NORTHLEACH PRISON

Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, the Old Prison of Northleach is a haunting reminder of a darker era. Built in the early 1800s as a House of Correction, it was a place of punishment, reform, and despair. Behind its cold stone walls, men, women, and even children endured grim conditions, harsh labor, and unyielding punishment for crimes as minor as stealing bread.

The prison's history took a darker turn after the introduction of brutal devices like the treadmill and hand winch, designed to crush both body and spirit. Overcrowding, disease, and misery permeated its corridors, leaving behind whispers of suffering that linger to this day.

Although the prison was closed in 1857, its story didn’t end. Repurposed as a police station and later a casual ward, the building now stands as a monument to its troubled past.

"At around 7pm, I realized I’d left something at my office in the Old Prison and went back to retrieve it. The building was empty, lights off, and locked for the night. Entering through the main door into the courtroom, we walked down the corridor to Louise's office.

While near the cell block, we both heard a male voice, but couldn't make out the words. My friend then saw two figures in the courtroom—a tall, slim man in smart attire with wire-framed glasses, speaking to a shorter, plump man in a waistcoat, black shoes, and a top hat.

The encounter lasted just a few seconds, and we left shortly after, walking back through the courtroom and out the main door."
