Ghostly Nights brings to you a unique opportunity to explore the paranormal goings on at Oxford Castle and Prison through the night. A partly ruined, medieval castle that has seen its fair share of bloodshed and war. The castle dates back to the Norman era, where it was marked by the Normans after the Battle of Hastings as the ideal location to build a Motte-and-baily castle. By the early 13th century, the original moated, wooden motte-and-bailey castle was replaced in stone.
Most of the castle was later destroyed in the English Civil War and by the 18th century the remaining buildings had become Oxford's local prison. From 1785 onwards, a new prison was built on the site and further expanded in 1876. It became known as HM Prisons Oxford, serving as one of the most notorious prisons of its time.
Oxford Castle has seen many deaths and has many ghost stories, such as the Royalist Ghost of Colonel Francis Windebank who was executed during the civil war. He is now rumoured to haunt the site known aptly known as dead man’s walk.
In 1610, George Napier was hung, drawn and quartered and whilst most of his remains were recovered by his family, his head remained missing. There have been reported sighting around Oxford of a headless figure on a ghostly horse.
Oxford Castles crypt dates back over 900 years holding further stories of imprisonment, murder and executions with many alleged ghostly sightings reported with heavy footsteps, stones thrown, loud banging heard from within the cells and the eerie feeling of being followed through the corridors.
