Last night, Shepton Mallet Prison became the scene of an unforgettable paranormal investigation, offering an evening of spine-tingling experiences and eerie encounters that left guests shivering—not just from the cold, but from the feeling of unseen eyes watching from the shadows. With over 400 years of history, the prison’s dark past and infamous former residents seemed to awaken, delivering an atmosphere rich in supernatural energy.
An Evening of Exploration
The night began with our brave guests venturing into A Wing and C Wing, armed only with torches, their courage, and a thirst for answers. As they called out into the darkness, the spirits responded. A guest recoiled in shock as a ghostly inmate blew on her face and gently touched her from behind. Chillingly, the oppressive feeling of being watched spread throughout the group, punctuated by an unexplained scream echoing through the cells.
Moments of high strangeness soon followed. Sudden drops in temperature, a mysteriously flickering LED light, and inexplicable noises created an air of suspense. Guests embraced the challenge, stepping into the cells alone to confront the ominous energy within. One guest reported being struck in the face by a coin seemingly thrown from nowhere—a tangible reminder of the restless spirits that inhabit the prison’s walls.
Vigils and Unearthly Activity
Throughout the night, we led our guests through four vigils in different areas of the prison, each location brimming with its own unique energy and paranormal phenomena.
1. Execution Room – The Estes Method
The Execution Room proved particularly active, with intelligent responses captured during Estes sessions. Names such as Roger and Derek came through repeatedly, painting a picture of spirits with stories to tell. One guest felt the sharp sting of scratches forming across her back—visible evidence of the unseen forces at work. The air was heavy with emotion, mirroring the dread and hopelessness that must have filled this room in centuries past. Cat balls lit up on demand, and Annie, the motion-activated doll, added an eerie layer of confirmation to the activity.
2. C Wing – A Spirit’s Story Unfolds
C Wing offered our guests a chance to connect with spirits through a Ouija board. Messages ranged from personal notes from departed loved ones to cryptic conversations with former inmates. One guest, John, received a heartwarming yet emotional message from his father, assuring him of love and presence. Another spirit, Vikky, appeared to be searching for her child, moving the Ouija glass toward the picture of a woman and child printed on the board. As if in acknowledgment, a bolt placed on a flat surface was later hurled into a cell, stunning those present.
3. The Condemned Cell – Shadows of the Past
The Condemned Cell radiated an almost unbearable sense of despair. Guests reported overwhelming feelings of sadness, choking sensations, and heavy, oppressive energy. Yet, amid the dread, the spirits seemed willing to interact. Using tools such as dowsing rods and a human pendulum, the group experienced intelligent and responsive communication with the prison’s spectral residents.
4. The Infirmary – Lingering Pain
In the Infirmary, physical sensations such as nausea and aching limbs affected many guests, suggesting lingering pain from the spirits of those who suffered there. The dowsing rods provided some of the most compelling responses of the night, with clear and direct answers to questions, giving a voice to those long silenced.
Unexplainable Encounters
Each guest brought their own energy to the night, amplifying the paranormal activity in unexpected ways. The prison seemed alive with unseen presences, ready to engage with those who dared to seek them out. EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) recordings calso captured chilling voices.
The session in the Execution Room reached a climax when a guest, already scratched earlier in the evening, experienced another round of physical contact. Lifting her shirt, she revealed fresh scratches across her back, sending shockwaves through the group.
Final Reflections
As the night drew to a close, the guests were left in awe of the sheer volume and intensity of activity they had witnessed. Grounding and protection rituals were revisited to ensure everyone departed safely, both physically and spiritually. The laughter, energy, and bravery of the guests made the night a truly memorable investigation.
