SHAFTESBURY THEATRE
What goes 'bump' in the night?
Join Ghostly Nights as we investigate the historic Shaftesbury Theatre in Dawlish, a much-loved community theatre with roots stretching back to the early 1880s.
Originally built as Shaftesbury Hall, the building was used for meetings, social gatherings and local events before becoming the permanent home of Dawlish Repertory Company in 1959. The company, formed in 1949 by a small group of theatre enthusiasts, purchased the hall and transformed it into the Shaftesbury Theatre, officially opening in September 1959.
Today, the theatre remains home to Dawlish Repertory Company and continues to serve the local community as an intimate 141-seat venue in the heart of Dawlish. It is maintained by a registered charity for the benefit of the town and surrounding district, supporting drama, youth groups, schools, musical theatre, exhibitions and community use.
Set within one of Devon’s historic seaside towns, the Shaftesbury Theatre is a venue filled with character. For decades, its stage, dressing rooms and backstage spaces have witnessed rehearsals, performances, nerves, laughter, applause and late-night activity.
The Shaftesbury Theatre is said to have its own resident ghost, believed to be connected to the cottage that once stood behind the bar area.
Stories suggest she likes to make her presence known, especially when the theatre is busy. Shiny objects are said to go missing, people have reported feeling hurried or made to run, and there is a sense that she enjoys the energy of a full building.
Whether playful, mischievous or simply keen to be noticed, her presence adds another layer of intrigue to this historic Dawlish venue. When the theatre falls quiet after dark, the question is simple. Is it just the old building settling, or is someone still making sure she is not forgotten?
